As a result of this lesson, you will:
1. define information retrieval.
2. discuss the information transfer cycle including the user community, the role of the author, the role of the publisher and the role of the information center.
3. discuss the role of information services and its major functions.
4. discuss at least two types of information need.
5. discuss the input, organization and control, and output phases of an information retrieval system.
6. discuss at least four problems common to information retrieval systems.
7. list the basic components of an information retrieval system. describe what a data base management system is.
8. define and describe file, record, field and character in relation to a data base.
9. describe and discuss at least three basic data base structures.
10. use a systematic approach to designing a data base.
