INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Assigned Readings

Reading assignments primarily will come from the texts or related readings. The material should be read when it is assigned. This will give a common base from which to discuss issues and concerns on WebCT.

The Courtney and Williams/Tollett texts have been ordered at the URI Bookstore in Kingston. You will find that they are also available at most of the online bookstores or can be ordered through one of your local bookstores. I would suggest that you obtain copies as soon as possible so you can do the readings for the first week of class.

Required Texts:

Courtney, N. (2007). Library 2.0 and Beyond Innovative Technologies and Tomorrow's Users. Wesport, CT: Libraries Unlimited. (ISBN: 1-59158-537-6) (Table of Contents)

Williams, R., & Tollett, J. (2006). The Non-Designer's Web Book. Third Edition. Berkeley, CA: Peachpit Press. (ISBN:0-321-30337-7) (Table of Contents)

You may use an earlier edition of the Williams and Tollett text, but you will have to adjust the readings to the topics for the week for some chapters as the topics are changed from edition to edition.

Optional Texts (On Reserve in URI Library):

Beekman, G., & Quinn, M. J. (2008). Tomorrow's Technology and You, Complete. Eighth Edition. New York: Prentice-Hall. (ISBN: 0132297205) (Table of Contents)

Norton, M.J. (2000). Introductory Concepts in Information Science. New York: Information Today, Inc. (ISBN: 1573870870) (Table of Contents)

Please obtain the texts from the publisher, Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles, some other online source, or through a local bookstore if you choose to use them. Most online sources send out the text within twenty-four hours. The optional texts have not been ordered through the bookstore in Kingston.

Debons, A., Horne, E., & Cronenweth, S. (1988). Information Science: An Integrated View. Boston: G.K. Hall & Co. (ISBN: 0-8161-1857-4)
(This book is out-of-print so it may be difficult to locate. You will be provided pertinent information from this source in presentations on WebCT.)

Readings from the following document will be made available on the LSC 508 WebCT site in the Weekly Lesson for 9/26-10/2 as a downloadable PDF file:

The Association for Educational Communications and Technology. (1960). Research, Principles, and Practices in Visual Communication. Washington, D.C.: The Association for Educational Communications and Technology.
