INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Personal Website Project

You are to design a personal web site for presentation of your projects (annotations, data base assignment, information science theory project, and any other pertinent information) in this class and create the pages for the site using the HTML language.

The two primary purposes of this assignment are for you to

  • practice using the HTML language and show that you are proficient in developing a website using HTML and
  • use appropriate design techniques to develop an attractive and user friendly site.

You should NOT use MicroSoft Word, MicroSoft FrontPage, MicroSoft Visual Web Developer, Macromedia DreamWeaver, Netscape Composer, or other such software to generate the pages for your website until you have shown proficiency using the HTML language. You MUST develop your homepage, annotations assignment page, and database assignment page by writing the HTML yourself.

Once you have posted your database assignment on 10/16/08, you may contact me by WebCT email if you feel you have demonstrated proficiency with HTML. I will evaluate your site and if you have demonstrated proficiency beyond a very basic level, I will notify you that you may use use any web development programs such as those listed above (except MicroSoft Word) to continue development of your website. Use of other software to generate the HTML for your pages prior to being notified that you have demonstrated proficiency with HTML will result in a severe reduction in your grade for this assignment.

You will be provided space on the GSLIS server for your site. Instructions on how to set up your site will be given during the first week of class.

Your site should be posted by 9/25/08, but it is expected that your site will evolve and change as the semester progresses. The following sentence MUST be placed on the homepage of your site: This personal Web page is not an official University of Rhode Island Web page. See disclaimer.

where "See disclaimer" is a link to the following statement on the URI website: The University of Rhode Island provides personal Web pages for faculty, staff, and students as a forum for self expression. The University does not review personal Web pages and accepts no responsibility for the contents of these pages. The views and opinions expressed on both the Web pages themselves and/or of material accessed via links to other pages are those of the page authors only and are not in any way an official publication of the University.

You should link to this disclaimer on the Web at http://www.uri.edu/home/about/disclaimer-4.html.

The final grade for this assignment will be based on the site as it appears during the last week of the semester. Fifty per cent of the final grade will be based on your use of HTML and fifty percent will be based on the design of your site.

Due: Final version of website 12/9/08
