INTERNET FOR LIBRARIANS

Objectives: 5/22/06


As a result of this lesson, you will:

1. read Chapters 1 through 8 in Rosenfeld, Chapters 1 and 2 in Steilow and Chapters 1 through 4 in Williams & Tollett.

2. identify at least one idea for a virtual library project to undertake in this course.

3. discuss the history of computing and the affect it has had on information technology and services.

4. define and describe TCP, IP, packet, URL, HTTP, Telnet, Gopher, Veronica, WAIS, Archie, netiquette, flaming and spamming.

5. discuss why the packet switching concept was set up for the Internet.

6. define the World Wide Web and discuss its inception.

7. discuss directories, search engines, and meta-search engines.

8. define information architecture and describe what an information architect does.

9. discuss how information architecture is important for librarians and information specialists.

10. discuss five basic principles of information architecture.

11. discuss what a virtual library is and describe a systems approach to the design of a virtual libary.

12. reveiw HTML.

13. evaluate the URI GSLIS site and discuss how it might be improved to best meet the needs of a GSLIS student.

14 apply information architecture to the GSLIS site.
