INTERNET FOR LIBRARIANS

Objectives: 5/23/06


As a result of this lesson, you will:

1. read Chapters 9 through 12 in Rosenfeld, Chapters 5 and 6 in Steilow and Part 3 in Williams & Tollett.

2. discuss the major milestones in the history of the Internet.

3. discuss the contributions of some of the major contributors in the development of the Internet.

4. visit some sites that post links to "bad" web sites and identify some of the characteristics of poor web site design.

5. visit some sites that provide evaluation tools for evaluating web sites and identify new criteria to look for in evaluating web sites.

6. visit some sites for evaluating web sites for children and identify criteria for evaluating web sites for children.

7. define a Webquest and discuss how one is made.

8. explore NetScape Composer.

9. explore MicroSoft Frontpage and try it for thirty days free.

10. explore DreamWeaver and try it for thirty days free.

11. critically review the Special Libraries Association web site style guidelines and adopt those criteria that appear appropriate for your virtual library.

12. review and apply fair use guidelines and copyright law in designing your virtual library.

13. investigate the copyright laws as they apply to websites and discuss how they apply to you.

14. explore PhotoShop to enhance your photographs and try it for thirty days free.

15. apply information architecture to the GSLIS site.
