Dear Students:

Welcome to LSC544 Visual Information Science!

With the proliferation of visual information in this information age, the need to incorporate visual literacy into the curriculum of the Library and Information Science (LIS) programs is one of the most pressing tasks. Based on the results of a curriculum survey of both information science courses and any other courses related to visual literacy currently offered in all American Library Association Accredited LIS programs in North America in 1998, Dr. Yan Ma developed this most important and needed new course of “Visual Information Science” that has been offered at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island since 1999. The course provides you with an exciting opportunity to examine visual information science issues.

Course Description

An introduction to the interdisciplinary study of visual information science related to visual information (data) collection, analysis, processing, transmission, utilization, and communication with emphasis on psychological, social, and cultural aspects of visual information in modern and digital libraries and information centers. (Lec. 3)  Pre.: 508 or permission of instructor.
