GSLIS Financial Aid

Any general questions regarding financial aid should be directed to the Financial Aid Office, which is located in Green Hall, on the Kingston campus.

Graduate Assistantships - The GSLIS offers 4 FTE (up to 8 half-time) graduate assistantships, which carry tuition remission and stipends.(Click here for a sample letter of appointment.) In GSLIS, the typical half-time GA works 150 hours a semester for the assigned faculty member and 30 hours a semester for the GSLIS office. Duties include, but are not limited to assisting with faculty teaching, research, and service; maintaining the GSLIS website; updating the job list; and contributing to the design and dissemination of GSLIS recruitment materials. Applications for graduate assistantships for the spring semester are due by October 15 and for the summer or fall semesters by February 15.  

GSLIS scholarships are only open to matriculated students in a GSLIS program. The primary considerations in the review of general scholarship applications are need, aptitude, academic ability, and performance in the GSLIS program. Students are encouraged to re-apply each semester; deadlines are October 15 (for scholarships given in the spring semester) and February 15 (for scholarships in the summer or fall term) Scholarships are given in the form of tuition remission. Applicants will be considered for awards from the GSLIS General Scholarship Fund , endowed through the generosity of GSLIS graduates, faculty, and other friends, and from the H.W. Wilson Fund , provided through the generosity of the H.W. Wilson Company

GSLIS specialized scholarships may have additional criteria. These include -

The Betty Fast Memorial Scholarship was established by her family, alumni and friends to recognize students in the GSLIS program who show excellence in their academic work, strong potential in library leadership, and a commitment to youth services in school or public libraries. The award will be made in the form of a tuition benefit of $500. Deadline: February 15.

The Elizabeth Futas Scholarship is offered each spring semester to recognize and honor a librarian who invests time and talent to make positive change in the profession of librarianship. Donor: Elizabeth Futas Memorial Fund, $2500 and citation. Deadlines: October 15 and February 15.

The GSLIS Prism Scholarship, to increase diversity in librarianship and information services, is supported by a new endowment. Deadline: October 15.

The Frank Iacono Scholarship recognizes a student with a strong commitment to outreach. It is supported by donations to the GSLIS General Scholarship Endowment from Mr. Iacono's family, friends, and colleagues. Deadline: February 15.

The Patricia E. Jensen Scholarship is offered each summer to a regional student. Deadline: February 15.

The Stewart P. Schneider Scholarship is awarded each fall semester to a GSLIS student with professional aspirations in reference services. The winner will be announced at the spring Annual Gathering. Deadline: February 15.

Professional Association Memberships - To encourage professional growth and engagement, GSLIS will refund up to $25 of any student's first-year student membership in an LIS professional association. Funds for this initiative are provided through the Lucille Chernack Fund.

Many GSLIS students find employment in area libraries to help finance their education. Some have qualified for financial assistance through their state libraries, their state library associations, the American Library Association or other organizations.
