General Information:

The School Library Media Specialist Program is a Rhode Island State Approved Program in Library Media (K-12) and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), with National Recognition from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL; a division of the American Library Association).

Students who successfully complete this program receive a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree and become eligible for certification as school library media specialists in Rhode Island and other Interstate Certification Compact (ICC) states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and Vermont.


SLM Program Requirements

The thirty-six (36) hour Master's program requirements are:

  1. Fifteen (15) hours of core courses:
    1. LSC 502: Management of Library and Information Sources
    2. LSC 504: Reference & Information Services
    3. LSC 505: Organization of Information
    4. LSC 508: Introduction to Information Science & Technology
    5. LSC 557: Research and Evaluation in Library and Information Science
  2. Six (6) hours of literature courses:
    1. LSC 530: Library Resources for Children
    2. LSC 531: Library Resources for Young Adults
  3. A three (3) hour instruction course:
    1. LSC 527: Information Literacy Instruction
  4. A three (3) hour pre-practicum course:
    1. LSC 520:  School Library Media Services is sequenced as the pre-practicum field experience (must be taken in the summer or fall prior to the practicum; includes significant hours of pre-practicum field experiences)
  5. Nine (9) hours of supervised field experiences:
    1. LSC 596 School Library Media Practicum and Seminar is only offered in the spring semester and should be taken in the final spring semester. (12 weeks in two placements: 6 weeks in elementary school and 6 weeks in secondary school.)
