Message from the Director:

The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies educates library and information specialists to serve and empower diverse populations. There is no community without shared knowledge, and communities change as members reinterpret what they know. Working at the intellectual center of communities, our profession makes a difference.

Information services and libraries have many of the characteristics Huizinga ascribed to play: freedom, even-handedness, and order combine to create physical and intellectual spaces where we can entertain ideas. Our institutions bring together old and new tools for thought, from medieval manuscripts to Web 2.0 and SecondLife. By uniting tools and thinkers, we enable new patterns of communcation and new interpretations of old wisdom.

An education in librarianship offers challenging opportunities for a career that will meet the ever-changing demands of the future. The profession needs people with talent, motivation, and the ability to adapt to a continually changing world.
