The following are required for admission to the MLIS program:
- a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- an undergraduate grade point average of B or better
- Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies
Test scores at the 50th percentile or above for applicants who have not achieved a B or better undergraduate grade point average: GRE or MAT waived for applicants with a master's degree or who have achieved a 3.0 grade point average or above in their undergraduate degree. - two letters of recommendation, preferably from
previous instructors or employers - a current resume
- a statement of purpose
- $50 application fee for both instate and out of state applicants
- proof of residency in the state of Rhode Island for instate tuition and MA, ME, NH, and VT for regional tuition
Application materials
Application materials may be obtained from the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. The completed application and all supporting documents must be received by June 15 for September admission, October 15 for January admission, and March 15 for summer admission. For university-wide financial assistance, the application package must be received by January 15 for Fall admission.

Provisional admission
The GSLIS Admissions Committee may recommend admission of an applicant whose overall record indicates potential for success in the MLIS program even though all criteria for admission may not have been met at the stated level. Final decision on admission rests with the dean of the Graduate School.

Many GSLIS students find employment in area libraries to help finance their education. Some have qualified for financial assistance through their state libraries, their state library associations, the American Library Association or other organizations.
