General Information

The GSLIS offers a teacher certification program (TCP) with a specialization in library media for graduates with M.L.I.S. degrees. Candidates for certification must apply for admission following the GSLIS guidelines (not those for Teacher Certification for Education students).

Candidates who wish to apply to this program should indicate TCP on the application form and submit the following to the GSLIS Admissions Office. In addition to the application, two official transcripts of all prior academic work, showing receipt of the Bachelor's and the Master's degree; a statement of objectives and two letters of recommendation. Application dates are October 15 for spring admission, March 15 for summer admission, and June 15 for fall admission. Notification of acceptance or denial is mailed approximately six weeks after the application package is received by GSLIS.

Specific Information

Students admitted to the TCP program are governed by the same academic standards as matriculated and graduate students. Upon acceptance, the candidate must complete an official Program of Study in consultation with the coordinator of the School Library Media Program. The coordinator will analyze the student's transcripts to determine which courses can be accepted and which courses are needed to complete the student's credentials for the certification program.

The number of additional courses needed to complete the TCP program will vary depending upon transcript analysis. However, to meet the standards of our Rhode Island State Approved Program in Library Media (K-12) and NCATE accredited program (42 credit hours) students must have equivalent to the following URI courses:

LSC 502, LSC 504, LSC 505, LSC 508, LSC 557; either LSC 528 or LSC 529, LSC 530, LSC 531, LSC 520 (taken in the summer or fall semester prior to the Practicum).  LSC 596 Practicum and Seminar( to be taken in the final spring semester) 150 hours/5 weeks in an Elementary School program and 150 hours/ 5 weeks in a Secondary School program, and 6 elective credits including 3 hours in education (unless certified as a teacher).
