GSLIS mourns death of Professor Emeritus and former Director, Jonathan S. Tryon

Jonathan S. Tryon, Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, passed away on May 21, 2005. He was widely beloved as a teacher, a colleague, and a friend; many of us have been grateful for his steady good humor in difficult times. He was self-deprecating; at the time of his retirement, many of us wanted to set up a scholarship in his name, but he resisted the idea. He will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues in the library community.

Below is the obituary from the Providence Journal web page.

TRYON, JONATHAN S., 71, Professor emeritus, of Barrington, RI and Rockport, MA. died of cancer on May 21, 2005. He was the husband of Jean C. (Bouchie) Tryon.

Professor Tryon received his bachelor's degree in English from Brown University in 1955. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. After serving in the Navy, he earned a Master's Degree in Library Science as well as a certificate in Advanced Studies of Librarianship from Columbia University. Later he received a Master's Degree in English at the University of Rhode Island and a Jurist Doctor from Suffolk University.

He was a Professor of Library Science at the URI for over three decades and had also acted as Director of the Graduate Library School for many years. Professor Tryon wrote many juried articles for library journals and is the author of a book, 'The Librarian's Legal Companion.' Professor Tryon was a long-standing member of the ACLU, the Intellectual Freedom Committee of Rhode Island Library Association and the American Library Association.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Stephen H.S. Tryon and his wife Gail of Fairfax, VA, Jonathan C. Tryon and his wife Leslie of Rockport, MA, one daughter, Julia R. Tryon of Ashaway, RI, four grandsons, one step grandaughter and a sister-in-law, Joan Duchane of Gloucester, MA.

Funeral services were private.
