What is the Marine Bio Office?
(I heard lots of people talking about it and they have cool signs)
The Marine Biology Office runs for 10 hours per week every semester, staffed by student advisors. The advisors are available during their office hours to consult with students about courses, requirements of the program, how to get involved in marine biology, and sometimes to eat cupcakes.
We now have a giant book full of information on where to apply for internships, scholarships, study abroad programs, jobs, and volunteering opportunities. We have created a ListServ specifically for our majors, and are adding new student email addresses every semester. We have also created a network for our students with Biology faculty members, and even faculty at the Graduate School of Oceanography. When a faculty member needs lab help, or knows of a great student opportunity, they let us know. New this semester is the Marine Biology Office website, which puts the resources of the office onto the personal computers of all of our majors.
>Our goals for the Marine Biology Office include creating a stronger community for all marine biology majors. We hope the office will become a place where you can not only meet with advisors for advice, but also with fellow students, and maybe play in a sandbox. We just had our first Marine Biology field trip to the IMAX theater to see "Aliens of the Deep", and we hope to host more events like this in the future!
Some of our most valuable information and ideas comes from students, so please share your thoughts with us!
