What Past Participants Think:

"I initially signed up for French 412f simply to fulfill a requirement for the French major.  And I am very glad that I did.  French 412 introduced me to a new genre in French literature and some great contemporary authors who I might have passed over in favor of more "traditional" authors. Even in contemporary literature I was able to explore my own personal interest in existentialism, whose themes are prevalent in the novels we read.  I experienced a period of academic growth during that semester primarily due to two major components of this class, one being the electronic forum where we were able to discuss the novels among ourselves as well as the very authors who had written them.  The other component, the colloquium in which I participated, although nerve-wracking, presented me with the opportunity to express my opinions and justify them in front of an audience.  This is an exciting topic taught with enthusiasm and flair that I strongly recommend to all French majors!

"I loved FRN 412f. Some of the books we read are my favorite french literature. I think it is important for students to take this class because it explores a central part of  modern day french culture. Also we read books that are popular in France today. One of the best parts of the class was definitely the electronic forum, I enjoyed it because it allowed us to discuss the works we were reading with the author and seemed to create a feeling of intimacy. By directly communicating with the authors we were able to gain insight and understanding into their works which would have been unavailable to us by reading articles or using other second hand information. La Salle de Bain was my favorite of the works we read. I truly believe that FRN 412f is one of the best classes (if not the best) offered at URI."
