Welcome to the German Program!
German is one of the most important languages in the European Union today. It is the native language of almost 100 million people in four countries. Native speakers of German have been major contributors to the arts, the sciences, engineering and business for hundreds of years. Today, Germany has the largest economy in the EU and is a major trading partner of the U.S.
With over 110 majors, the German Program at the University of Rhode Island is one of the largest and most active of its kind in New England. Our mission is to provide high-quality instruction in German language and culture at the undergraduate level.
The program offers a vast array of opportunities for students interested in German: Double Major and Dual Degree Programs, annual two-week study tours to German, exchange programs with the university in Braunschweig/German, Hamburg/Germany and Salzburg/Austria, the Deutsche Sommerschule, one of the few summer immersion programs for German language and culture in the U.S., the Max Kade German language floor in the International Engineering Program house, the weekly Deutsche Kaffeestunde and much more.
