DSSA can make you forget you are in the United States. The staff is energetic and extremely knowledgeable. It is a great program that takes pains to expose participants to many language challenges besides class. While at DSSA I've met wonderful people, watched and discussed some of the newest German Films, played German games, and collected many ideas and materials for my classes. I highly recommend DSSA not only for students, but for teachers as well.

The Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik is a fantastic way to kickstart or expand your German ability. I never imagined that I could learn so much in such a short period of time - in only six weeks, I completed a full year of classes and gained a level of experience that could only be rivaled by an extended trip to Germany! I made many new friends from all over the world, which both taught me about other cultures and increased the number of people with whom I can practice my German.
Whether you're trying to get off to a strong start or to take your German to the next level, spending the summer "auf Deutsch" at the DSSA is a great idea!"

As an advanced level German speaker attending DSSA, I had the opportunity to take a modern German literature class, as well as participate in bi-weekly workshop classes and a mini-seminar. My German noticeably improved within the very first week.
I had a wonderful time speaking and reading German, going to the beach with new friends, and watching German films in the evenings. I was impressed by how much the teachers meshed cultural education and language instruction. The program is designed the encourage students to continuously use German--regardless if they are are beginners or fluent speakers--and I believe DSSA really does accomplish this not-so-easy task through the creativity and ever-present encouragement of the teachers, the various cultural and evening activities, and the shared living space. I had a wonderful experience at DSSA and have found it hard to return to the English-speaking world!

My 3-week experience at the Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik was amazing on so many levels! And as an advanced level learner of German, I was very surprised that I was able to have intelligible, intelligent conversations at meals and extra-curricular activities with beginner level students who had only been learning the language for 3 weeks.
So, if you want to learn to understand, read and write German quickly even without any prior knowledge, this is the program for you! If you are already at the intermediate or advanced level and are looking for an innovative, motivating, challenging and exciting program with lots of variety to expand your language skills, the DSSA is the place to be!
The incredible staff of highly-qualified, native-speaker instructors and support staff made everyone feel like family. The staff's energy, enthusiasm and engagement created a language community that kept students of all levels motivated to communicate and immerse themselves in German at all times even outside of class or workshops, at meal times, and while socializing on or off campus . I've never experienced anything like it.
And if you are a teacher looking for a worthwhile professional development opportunity in the summer, near the beach, on a beautiful campus, with creature comforts provided galore, with expert and experienced instructors that respect and treat you as colleagues, the Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantic is a great working vacation opportunity for you!

I have studied at the DSSA for two summers now because it is one of the best German-immersion programs in the US and is a very reasonable price. I feel that I have learned more German here than I would in a normal university course, because I not only use it during class, but all the rest of the day as well. The teachers are all from Germany and are very helpful (especially with beginners such as myself). I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in learning German.
