Courses & Placement
At the Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik we take great care to place you into the course level which is best for you. On the day of arrival, all participants, except true beginners take a placement test. This is followed by a brief oral interview if necessary.

In both sessions, we offer an extensive afternoon and evening extra-curricular program of German cinema, both current and classic, theater and music workshops and more.

An important part of the extra-curricular program is to participate in a required workshop two afternoons a week. This is part of the core instruction. Students in the Level 1 Program (GER 111/112) must attend the Beginners' Workshop. Participants at all other levels choose from several workshops we offer.

The German Summer School of the Atlantic (Die Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik - DSSA) provides intensive German language instruction at all proficiency levels.  Designed with students, teachers, and professionals in mind, the German Summer School offers fully accredited courses in German language, culture and literature in a German-only environment with extensive extracurricular programs.  We can accommodate special courses for engineering and business students, faculty and professionals through a collaboration with the International Engineering Program at the University of Rhode Island.  The German Summer School is located near Rhode Island's beach resorts, Newport, and historic Providence.
