Classical Studies

Welcome to the Classical Studies Program Website!

Classical Studies introduces the student to the languages and civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. It is unique in offering students knowledge of the origins of political, social and cultural traditions of the West (Europe, North and Latin America), and in giving them a context for understanding contemporary Western society and culture. Language study provides direct access to the written works of ancient cultures in the areas of literature, history and philosophy, while the "mute" resources of art and archaeology offer their complementary evidence.

The initial levels of language learning require an ability to master considerable amounts of detail. At higher levels, an enjoyment and sensitivity to literature is helpful, as well as an interest in other cultural traditions and behavior.
