About the Language: Modern Greek is the language of the inheritors of a 5,000-year-old civilization. It is the oldest written language among all Indo-European languages; its earliest record is in Mycenaean Linear B dating to the 15th century BCE. It is the language today of a vibrant nation on the borders of Europe and Asia.
About Greece: Greece is a land of contrast; picturesque islands, rugged mountains, isolated rural villages and modern cities. Every aspect of this amazing country reveals the diversity, complexity, enthusiasm, and intensity with which life is lived in Greece. With a single glance, one can easily discern the ancient world, Byzantine culture, and contemporary pragmatism. Here you can learn about classical civilization, walk through ancient streets, share the passion of local politics, see the Parthenon, the original Olympic stadium, and much more! XAIPETE!
Study Abroad: URI offers two programs for studying abroad in Greece:
- The summer program on Rhodes takes place on the Island of Rhodes in July each year, and offers study of Greek myth and the culture of ancient Greece, including visits to archaeological sites.
- The University of the Aegean offers full year (or semester) programs, also on Rhodes. It offers a variety of courses in such fields as Marine Biology, Ecology, Oceanography, Environmental Policy and Underwater Archaeology.
