Portuguese Studies
Portuguese is the 6th most commonly spoken language in the world. It is the official language of Brazil, the largest country of Latin America, the 6th largest country in the world, with the 8th largest economy. It is the official language of Portugal, the European "conqueror of the world" in the past, responsible for spreading the Portuguese language and culture to many places in the globe. It is now becoming a country of immigration especially for people from its ex-colonies and also for Eastern Europeans. In Africa, people from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé, and Príncipe Islands also speak Portuguese.
URI offers four semesters of Portuguese study.
