Russian Studies
Russian studies includes faculty and courses in language, literature, history, political science, and women's studies. The Russian language is also highly recommended by the faculty of the Forensic Science Program in conjunction with their minor.
Humanities Students: Russian is the only European language taught at URI that has competitive, government-sponsored, all-expenses paid scholarships available for summer, semester, or year-long study in Russia and the nations of the former Soviet Union. Russian remains the chief language of communication of the former Soviet Russian republics in Europe and Central Asia, including joint UR government programs with these nations. Non-governmental organizations have a critical need of Americans with Russian language skills to work in a variety of non-profit areas such as the environment, women's resources, and critical health issues as well as to participate in an ever-expanding variety of cultural exchange programs.
Science Students: Russia, for the foreseeable future, is expected to be our number one partner in space research and travel. Russian army intelligence maps showed our "smart" bombs how to find their way into the caves of Afghanistan. Russian computer hacker who stole millions from an American bank was caught by joining US/Russian intelligence. The Russian language is second only to English in terms of the number of published works on scientific research.
