URI ROTC Alumni
Welcome to the MARCH 2001 edition of the University of Rhode Island ROTC Alumni Association "ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER".
Here are a few important upcoming events on the calendar. All alumni are invited to attend so please do consider this an invitation (note need to RSVP certain events):
1. 24 March: Cadet CAR WASH fundraiser; parking lot of Middletown, RI Burger King. Help the cadets fund their annual ROTC Ball in Newport (see next item).
2. 27 April: ROTC Military Ball; at the Newport Officer's Club, 1800 hrs. All alumni members invited to attend; RSVP via email to LTC Mike Papadapolous, PMS @ URI: URIPMS@aol.com
3. 3 May; Annual ROTC Awards Ceremonies & Presentations: held in the Galanti Lounge in the University Library (third floor) beginning 1800 hrs= awards presentations followed by a brief, informal reception. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. This is a great way to renew affiliation with the program and catch up with some old friends.
4. 20 May; Annual Commissioning Ceremonies (AM; exact time TBA); on the walkway immediately in front of Keaney Gymnasium.
NEXT MEETING OF THE ROTC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:
4 April: 1830 hrs: Keaney Gymnasium - in the ROTC main training/conference room (adjacent to the first floor ROTC Dept. offices). Please mark your calendars and join us in this important business meeting
UPDATE: RE: ROTC HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS:: We have already received one nomination for the ROTC Hall of Fame and we're informed others are being prepared and expected to be received shortly. The Selection Committee plans to meet to review all nominations received by the closing date of 1 April 2001. Installation ceremonies will be scheduled for the week of 17-21 September 2001.
News from the "Field":
Received word from Bill MacQuattie, '56 LTC (Ret.). Bill currently lives in San Francisco and returns to Rhode Island around the year end holidays. Bill was in RI this past Christmas and had lunch with Peter Boiani, '56 , COL (Ret.) and his wife Trudy. Bill retired from active duty in 1976 after 20 yrs with the Quartermaster Corps. His last post was Chief of the Subsistence Branch, V Corps. In 1977 Bill settled in San Francisco where he became employed in food distribution and warehousing businesses. In 1983 he bought a small summer resort (Packer Lake Lodge) in the Sierra Mountains - located some 9 miles outside of Sierra City some 45 miles north of Truckee or about 75 miles NW of Reno, Nevada. 1Lt Rachel Tice (formerly Moore), '98: is stationed in Landsthul, Germany in her initial assignment on active duty. She worked as a RN on a mother-baby ward and is currently TDY in Hawaii (!!!)attending the Labor and delivery course for four months. She will return to Landstuhl and word there. Rachel was married in Salzburg, Austria on 4 Feb 00 to Edward Tice who also attended URI and is a nurse too. Rachel can be reached at: honeybutt98@hotmail.com
MAJ John Clays, '82 writes he is currently living in Narragansett, RI and has been married for three years to the former Kelly Wunderlich. He recently completed a three year reserve tour as the BN XO of the 443d Civil Affairs BN in Warwick, RI and works for Gilbane Building Company as Project Manager. LTC Mark Barbosa, '82 writes to us as the Commander of the 28th Transportation Battalion in Mannheim, Germany. The 28th Trans BN is the largest Truck Battalion in the US Army with just over 930 soldiers (8 units). Mark assumed command 2 June 2000 and since has deployed to Rijeka, Croatia to command a U.S. Army European Task Force from Aug-Oct 2000. Mark, his wife Charlae and four children (Jacqueline - 14, Marcus -12, Jennifer and Michelle - both 8) are well and send their regards to friends at URI/ROTC. Kudos to : Lt. Susan (Lampro) Hubert, '98 for tracking down LTC Mark Barbosa (see above), her battalion commander and linking him with the ROTC Alumni Association. Shame on your editor (Me) for misplacing the email received from Susan!!!!! As a result, I cannot update you all on her latest activities and whereabouts, etc. - only that she's stationed in Germany with a unit of the 28th Trans BN. Susan, please re-send information and I promise to get you "published" in the next issue of our "Electronic Newsletter"!
A very special THANK YOU goes out to LTC (Ret.) Ted Higgins, '71 for his recent involvement in our alumni chapter. Ted is working to assist us with our first annual golf outing, tentatively scheduled for October of 2001 - details to be announced in a future newsletter. Thanks, Ted, for stepping forward and offering of your help and organizational talents for what will surely be a fun event.
We recently received word from former Assistant PMS at URI ROTC , COL (Ret.) Jim Malley: Jim retired from active duty in 1984 as Chief Operations Research Systems Analysis for US Army Europe. He was alerted then called to active duty during Desert Shield and later spent a nine month tour as part of a special study group in Washington DC. Jim is now back home in New England and lives at: PO Box 746, Merrimack, NH 03054 and can be reached at: JHMalley@earthlink.net
CPT JC Glick, '95 ("Comanche 6") assumed command of Comanche Company, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry, 3d Brigade, Initial Brigade Combat Team at Fort Lewis, Washington on 18 January 2001. Congratulations to JC. He is part of the very first Army Interim Brigades involved with the Army's Transformation Program. He hope to be able to work with CPT Glick to arrange for a late 2001 visit to URI to speak with the ROTC cadets during the fall semester of the 2001-02 academic year. Stay tuned!
