B.M. in Composition A student at URI can receive a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition, specializing in either classical or studio composition. A classical composition specialization can lead to advanced study with careers in college teaching and professional composition for performing ensembles. A sudio composition specialization will prepare the composer for advancd study and careers in college teaching as well as in jazz, popular, film and media music fields. Students in this degree program are expected to take applied composition and instrumental or vocal lessons during their course of study, as well as participate in departmental music ensembles. Classes in music theory, history, analysis, counterpoint, and other advanced areas are part of the curriculum. Student works are performed each semester in URI Composers Concerts. Seniors present a composition recital of their works. Satisfactory development of a portfolio of one’s work is required. The resources available to the URI composer include several ensembles, large and small, to serve as laboratory groups for compositional projects. Also available are recording facilities, the Arts Computer Laboratory with software in the areas of theory, composition and music literature, and a departmental music library with a large collection of scores and recordings. |
