| Application to the University of Rhode Island |
 |
Students seeking admission to the Department of Music must apply to the University of Rhode Island. Application forms and other materials are available online or can be sent from the Office of Admissions. In addition, auditions in the principal performing area are required for both Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music degree candidates. Students must submit their URI admission application either prior to or immediately after their music audition.
Auditions are juried performances before music faculty members and are used to determine the student's level of playing or singing ability. All candidates must be musically qualified for study at the freshman level in their applied performance area. A successful audition is also a prerequisite for all students who seek a music scholarship or who intend to minor in music, regardless of their degree program. |
 |
Audition Guidelines
Candidates should prepare materials according to the guidelines listed below. Students may audition in more than one performance area if they wish.
Candidates who plan to major or minor in music may audition on specific instruments such as bass clarinet or English horn, but once accepted to URI and the Music Department, they will be required to take lessons for credit on the related primary instrument (i.e., clarinet instead of bass clarinet or oboe instead of English horn.)
Candidates who plan to audition for the Bachelor of Music degree in performance shall perform an audition as described below, but are expected to demonstrate an advanced level of technical and musical abilities, including three octave major scales, if appropriate on their instrument. |
Audition Requirements
|
 |
| Audition Date and Reservations |
|
| All candidates must submit an audition reservation form and the Undergraduate Music Admission and Audition Information Formto the Department of Music at least TWO WEEKS before your requested date. This form is available for download. Submission of this form does not guarantee you a spot on your requested date. You should also call the Music Department at 401-874-5955 within 2 days of submitting this form to be assigned a specific time. Please note that some audition dates are for both scholarship and admission consideration, others for admission only. Special individual arrangements during personal campus visits are difficult to arrange and are discouraged. All auditions require a confirmed reservation at least one week in advance of the audition date. |
| Accompanists |
| The Department requires an accompanist only for vocal candidates. Any vocal or instrumental candidate may bring his/her own accompanist for an audition. If an accompanist provided by the Department is desired, the music which the accompanist will be playing must be received two weeks in advance of the audition date. Do not send copies by fax as they are unsuitable for practice or performance. Additionally, candidates using a department-provided accompanist should arrive approximately one hour before the audition time so that they can rehearse with the accompanist. |
| Recorded Auditions |
| If an on-campus audition is impossible on one of the Department's audition dates, or if the applicant resides 400 or more miles from the University, a DVD or a high quality CD may be submitted, provided that the audition repertoire complies with the announced department requirements. The Department of Music's Undergraduate Music Admission and Audition Information Form must be enclosed with the audition materials. |
| Placement Theory Examination |
| A placement theory test involving written theory, ear training, sight singing, and rhythmic clapping will be given to all students for placement in the music theory curriculum. |
