in the principal performing area are required for both Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music degree candidates. Students must submit their URI admission application either prior to or immediately after their music audition.
Auditions are juried performances before music faculty members and are used to determine the student's level of playing or singing ability. All candidates must be musically qualified for study at the freshman level in their applied performance area. A successful audition is also a prerequisite for all students who seek a music scholarship or who intend to minor in music, regardless of their degree program.
Candidates who plan to major or minor in music may audition on specific instruments such as bass clarinet or English horn, but once accepted to URI and the Music Department, they will be required to take lessons for credit on the related primary instrument
(i.e., clarinet instead of bass clarinet or oboe instead of English horn.)
Candidates who plan to audition for the Bachelor of Music degree in performance shall perform an audition as described below, but are expected to demonstrate an advanced level of technical and musical abilities, including three octave major scales, if appropriate on their instrument.
