23  Friday  Great Performances.   The Silken Phoenix.   The Core Ensemble with Fiona Choi.   Poetry and lives of Izumi Shikibu (10 th C. Japan),   Ho Xuan Huong (18 th C. 1    Saturday   Graduate Recital.   Tricia Maher, violin.   1:00 p.m.   Free.

1    Saturday   University Artist Series.   Premiere Night featuring Manabu Takasawa, piano.   A piano solo recital including a U.S premiere of Stone Gate written for the pianist by Tokyo composer Yoshihiro Kanno and a world premiere by Eliane Aberdam, URI faculty composer.   8:00 p.m.

14    Friday    University Artists Series.   A Salute to the American Music Theater featuring the Music of Enrico Garzilli, Cole Porter and others.   With the URI Symphony Orchestra, Ann Danis, conductor; URI Concert Choir, Mark Conley, conductor; Keara Donohoe, Australian soprano; Arlene Violet, narrator, and other guest artists and alumni.   A chance to hear the music of Rhode Island’s internationally acclaimed Enrico Garzilli, along with other musical theater favorites.   8:00 p.m.   Tickets; $25; $15 URI Faculty/Staff/Seniors; $5 Students. 15   Saturday   University Artist Series.   Sights and Sounds.   Eliane Aberdam (URI), Gary Buttery (Connecticut College and URI)and Geoffrey Gibbs (URI).   Compositions by southern New England composers.   A kaleidoscope of works for viola, piano, voice, electronics, video, low brass, and woodwinds and other media.   8:00 p.m.             

16    Sunday University Artist Series.   The Emergence of the Musical Score during the Renaissance and Baroque Eras.  A special lecture presentation by James Ladewig, Professor of Music History at URI.   Internationally known and widely published musicologist shares his latest research findings, and inaugurates the Music Department’s newly established James Ladewig Scholarship in Music History.   3:00 p.m.   All proceeds go to the Ladewig Scholarship endowment.

22    Saturday    Great Performances.   Mir Zaynen Do:   We Are Still Here!   The Western Wind.   World-renown, six-voice a cappella group performing music of composers who have survived the Holocaust.   8:00 p.m.   Admission $15; URI Faculty/Staff/Seniors $12; Students $5.

23   Sunday  University Artist Series.   Concert Hall to Cabaret:   A Musical Marriage of the Sublime to the Ridiculous!    An afternoon of solos and duets sung by faculty artist, Barbara Youmans, mezzo-soprano and URI alumnus, Rex Whicker, dramatic tenor, accompanied by Eric Mazonson, piano.   A mixture of German lieder, opera and cabaret.   “You may laugh, you may cry.   You may laugh until you cry.”   3:00 p.m.

30   Sunday Symphonic Wind Ensemble.   Gene Pollart, conductor. Program includes Windsprints by Saucedo, Wind Dancer by Spears, Medieval Suite by Nelson, Pageant by Persichetti, and Bandancing by Stamp.  Concert Band.  Brian Cardany, conductor.   Concert includes works by Gillingham, Bach and Stamp.   3:00 p.m.

5    Saturday    URI Annual Fall Choral Festival.   Mark Conley, coordinator.   Talented high school singers and their teachers from the region participate in an all-day festival, featuring rehearsals, masterclasses, and an evening concert.   Registration fee.

5    Saturday  URI Fall Choral Festival Concert.   Constantina Tsolainou, guest conductor.   High school participants in the Festival Chorus perform compositions rehearsed throughout the day.   Appearances by University choral ensembles.   7:00 p.m.   Free.
