Bio
CAROLYN LIVINGSTON received her bachelor's degree from Tennessee Technological University and her master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Before coming to URI Livingston taught music in Maryland, Tennessee, and Florida. She had an independent piano studio and taught pre-school, elementary, middle school, and high school music at various times in her career. She was director of choirs at First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Florida for eight years. She joined URI's Department of Music in 1987 and retired in 2008. Livingston taught twenty-four different undergraduate and graduate courses at URI. As an affiliate of the URI Women's Studies Program, she designed and taught URI's first course in Women and Music in 2007. She was founder and director of URI Children's Chorus from 1995 to 2000. Coordinator of music education from 1989 to 1997, she was also director of music graduate studies from 1997 to 2006.

She was one of two professors chosen URI Humanities Fellow for 2003-2004. A member of the editorial committees of the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Livingston has been a presenter for state, regional, national, and international conferences, She has forty articles published in professional journals. Her book, Charles Faulkner Bryan: His Life and Music, was published in 2003 by the University of Tennessee Press. She is co-editor of Rhode Island's Musical Heritage: An Exploration, Harmonie Park Press, 2008.

Livingston was one of four history researchers invited to present separate special sessions commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Association for Music Education at the 2006 national conference. The same year, she received the organization's History Special Research Interest Group's (HSRIG) Biennial Award for outstanding service and research. She served as HSRIG chair from 2002 to 2004. Grove's Dictionary of American Music (AmeriGrove), 2010, will include her article on Charles Faulkner Bryan.

Livingston's biography is included in Contemporary Authors, 2004, Who's Who of American Women, 2007, and Who's Who in America, 2009.
