Performance Opportunities

Orchestral Program

URI Symphony Orchestra
The orchestra dates back to the 1930's. It consists of skilled student and community musicians and gives several major concerts of classical, romantic, and contemporary literature. Recent programs have included Beethoven's fifth, Dvorak's New World symphony, and works by student composers. Student instrumentalists must audition to perform with the orchestra on a regular basis. Through participation, students develop their ensemble techniques and learn to become leaders as performers, educators, and conductors.

Choral Program
University Chorus
This large ensemble regularly performs major works such as Vivaldi's Gloria, Shubert's Mass in G, and Durufle's Requiem with full orchestra and soloists. All students who wish to participate are welcome to join.

Concert Choir

This select group specializes in a variety of works from the Renaissance era to the present. Frequent concerts are performed before the University and community audiences and on tour. Recently, the Concert Choir was selected to perform at the Eastern MENC Regional Conference. An audition is required.

Opera Workshop

Students participate in every aspect of opera production. They learn the basic technique of opera, sing on stage, and prepare arias, scenes, and full-scale productions. Recent performances before the University and community audiences have included The Medium, Gianni Schicchi, a world premiere of Dr. Know-It-All, a full staged production of Purcell's Dido and Aeneus, and scenes from The Marriage of Figaro, The Tales of Hoffman, and Falstaff.

Band Program
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
A skilled, select group of student wind players and percussionists rehearse and perform the finest literature available. They perform at prestigious conventions, festivals, and concerts and often engage prominent guest soloists and conductors. An audition is required for membership.

University Concert Band

This ensemble, comprised of music and non-music majors, performs a wide range of music, from traditional to contemporary. No audition is required for membership.

URI Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band

With its versatile marching style, which blends traditional techniques and outstanding contemporary show design, the URI marching band is respected throughout New England for its musical achievement and entertaining performances. It plays at many major athletic events and at other functions during the fall semester. Students from all majors play in the wind, brass, and percussion sections, and perform in the flag line. The URI basketball Pep Band provides musical enthusiasm at the URI Ram's games. No audition is required for membership in either group.

Jazz Program

Jazz Ensembles

America's indigenous music is right at home on the URI campus with a very active big band, as well as jazz ensembles that play at many regional jazz festivals and venues. An annual URI Jazz Week brings in name performers, and the band has been host to such musicians as Phil Wilson, Gary Burton, Slide Hampton, Hal Crook, the Woody Herman Band, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Auditions are required.

Student Chamber Ensembles

Undergraduate Honors String Quartet
Highly qualified undergraduate students who play the violin, viola, or violoncello audition annually to perform as members of the Undergraduate Honors String Quartet. Participants in this ensemble receive substantial scholarships towards payment of their tuition and fees. The Quartet performs one major public concert each semester and is often asked to perform at various university related functions and off campus activities. Recent concerts have involved the performance of advanced repertoire by such major composers as Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Shostakovich, Barber, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schubert.

Honors String Quartet

Other Chamber Ensembles

Student chamber ensembles are coached each semester by artist faculty in the music department. They perform at least once each semester on a chamber music program and/or at Thursday afternoon convocations. Each group meets twice weekly, once with the coach, and once by themselves. The meeting times for these groups are generally decided at the first convocation of each semester by participants in consultation with the coach. Previous groups have included:
