The music department at URI is one of the most vibrant and exciting at the University. Dedicated to excellence in musical performance, teaching, and scholarship, we attract students from around the country who are drawn by the quality of our curriculum and faculty, the vitality of our artistic community, and our outstanding national reputation. We offer professional music degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. |
With an average of 170 students majoring in music, we are able to take an individual interest in each student’s personal and professional path to success. We offer the advantages of a small school while still offering big-school opportunities for performance and study. Our faculty of nearly 40 dedicated artists and scholars have wide-ranging experience and really care about our students. The department also serves all students at the university regardless of their major --last year 4,000 students took music courses here. |
Small place, big results!
Each year, more than 210 concerts and recitals are given by faculty, students, guest artists, and departmental ensembles. We host several festivals as well as two top-quality concert series, the Kingston Chamber Music Festival, and the University Artist Series. The department serves as a cultural center not only for the university, but also for the local community, the state and the region. Established over 50 years ago, we are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
