Marching Band and Pep Band

With its versatile marching style, which blends traditional techniques and outstanding contemporary show design, URI’s “Ram” marching band is respected throughout New England for its musical achievement and entertaining performances. Nicknamed “The Pride of New England” in the 1960s and early 1970s, the band made appearances as half-time entertainment at NFL games for the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. It currently plays at many major athletic events and at other functions during the fall semester. Students from all majors play in the wind, brass, and percussion sections, and perform in the flag line.

The band generally travels to at least one away football game each year, and performs for parades and other community events. Since 2002, the marching band has also produced a compact disc recording each year. New uniforms were premiered in the 2004 season.

The URI basketball Pep Band provides musical enthusiasm at the URI Rams games. The band performs at all home basketball games, for both the men’s and women’s teams. The Pep Band usually accompanies one or both teams to the Atlantic-10 tournament, budget permitting. Since the 2003-04 season, Pep Band members have been able to earn up to 1 credit during the spring semester for their participation. Currently, all members are asked to perform at every home game, although they are only required to attend about half to earn full credit for the course.

No audition is required for membership in either group.
