The URI OPERA WORKSHOP provides young and older singers an opportunity to explore a range of operatic repertoire through opera scene study, one-act operas from the Baroque period through contemporary American operas, and fully staged complete operas and operettas. Past performances include Purcell's DIDO AND AENEAS, Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE, Foss's JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY and Puccini's GIANNI SCHICCHI. Future scheduled performances include Mollicone's FACE ON THE BAR ROOM FLOOR for the Fall of 2005 and Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE in the Spring of 2006.

The Opera Workshop has been around for at least 15 years and possibly longer. Past directors have included Gary Glaze in the early 1990's and Dan Sullivan from 1994 thru 1997. Rene de la Garza has been the director since the fall of 1997. The program has grown from the early years when there were mostly opera scene performances and occasional one-act opera performances. In 2003 we performed THE MIKADO and 2004 we performed GIANNI SCHICCI at the Feinstein URI campus in Providence at the Paff theatre. In the spring of 2005 we performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore on campus and also at The Greenwich Odeum in East Greenwich, R.I., which was our first non-campus performance to date, although we have previously performed outreach highlight performances in the public schools in E. Greenwich (THE MAGIC FLUTE) and an invited dress rehearsal of THE JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY for students from St. Pius School of Westerly.
