Questions of the Day

1. What is the minimum wage? What would be the annual income of someone working full time and earning minimum wage?

2. What can we expect to see happen to wages of retail workers as a result of rapid expansion in cybershopping?

3. What are the annual earnings of a college graduate? a high school graduate?

4. There is a very large range in the earnings of workers at universities.  You should try to identify examples of earnings differentials that can be explained as the result of compensating differentials, skills and abilities, imperfect competition, and discrimination.

5. Some people use the differences between the average earnings of males and females as evidence of discrimination.  You are to list at least five factors other than gender discrimination that would explain at least part of the difference between average earnings.

6. There was a time when the seats in buses in the South were segregated.  It turns out that the owners of the bus lines were against the segregation policy of setting aside certain seats for Blacks and Whites.  Please explain why the owners might have been against such a plan?

7. Are women discriminated against when they buy cars?   This is a complaint that I have heard raised and I would like you to look into it.   Please identify two approaches that one could take to "test" for discrimination and describe how you might conduct the tests.
