A Note
From the Chair
Professor Maureen Moakley
Chair - Political Science Department,
University of Rhode Island
-
The Spring semester is underway and we are delighted with the number of
students who elected to take a range of courses in political science. In
addition, we have a growing number of accomplished graduate students, several
from abroad, who add to the quality and character of our graduate program.
-
We are happy to report that we are making considerable headway on the department's
efforts to complete a fund drive for the new intellectual home and office
for pre-law students and the conversion of Washburn 208 into an interactive
teaching classroom. This will serve the needs and interests of our students
and many of our talented faculty who enjoy teaching in a less structured
environment. We expect construction will start this summer.
-
On another front, it is with regret that we report that our own Professor
Ed Leduc has decided to retire. This will be his last semester teaching
at the university. Ed has made significant contributions to the department,
teaching research methods and state politics courses, running the internship
program at the Rhode Island State House, and moving many of the faculty,
including myself, into the 21st century by getting us computer literate
and aiding our entry into cyberspace. While we are happy that he and his
wife are about to enjoy retirement, we will surely miss him.
-
The Fall 2000 semester is shaping up nicely. Since this is an election
year, we are fortunate to have a number of "notables" who will be teaching
courses related to the election. Rhode Island's own Myrth York will teach
a course on Elections 2000, and Jack McConnell will be teaching a course
on the American legal system. Other political folk have expressed interest
in having a go at teaching courses during the upcoming election cycle.
