Norman L. Zucker (Ph.D. Rutgers University, 1960), Professor. Professor Zucker has taught at Rutgers, Northeastern, and Tufts Universities before coming to URI in 1966. He is the author of Desperate Crossings: Seeking Refuge in America (1996), The Guarded Gate: The Reality of American Refugee Policy (1987), The Coming Crisis in Israel: Private Faith and Public Policy (1973), The American Process: Readings and Comments (1968), George W. Norris: Gentle Knight of American Democracy (1966), as well as many book chapters, articles, and reviews. Both Desperate Crossings and The Guarded Gate were named outstanding books in this field by the Gustavas Myers Center. Professor Zucker has also been the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship in Human Rights and numerous other grants and awards. Professor Zucker teaches in the area of American politics. His courses include Introduction to American Politics, Political Parties, Legislative Process and Public Policy. In addition, he occasionally teaches a course in Israeli politics. Since 1980 his primary research and writing interest has been American refugee policy. He was a consultant to the Select Commission on Immigrations and Refugee Policy and authored the Commissions report entitled "The Voluntary Agencies and Refugee Resettlement n the United States." Professor Zucker has served as a member of the editorial advisory boards of World Affairs: The Journal of the American Peace Society, the Journal of Refugee Studies, and Forced Migration Review.
