Graduate Studies in Psychology: How to Apply

Application Submission:

Applications are completed online. The online application is managed through the Graduate School. When you complete the online application through the Graduate School, you will select the program to which you are applying, i.e., Clinical Psychology, School Psychology (M.S. only or the Ph.D. program), and Behavioral Science (listed in the application as Experimental Psychology). Any information not completed online should be mailed to the Psychology Admissions Office. Admission to URI must be offered by the specific program to which you are applying and by the Graduate School. A list of all the materials you will need to complete an application is presented below. NOTE: Although application materials are the same for each program, there are slight variations in how the materials should be prepared. Please see the specific admission pages of the program of interest for more information.

Application Materials

  • Online application
  • Application fee, $65
    • This can be paid online or by check
  • Personal Statement
    • Written in the online application. Refer to individual admissions page for each program for further information.
  • Two official transcripts from every undergraduate and graduate institution you attended
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • The Graduate School's admissions criteria mentions having only two letters, but the Psychology Department requires an additional letter.
  • A copy of your Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  • GRE scores (the Advanced Test in Psychology is not required by any of the programs).

    • Please note that it can take ETS up to six weeks to process and mail your GRE scores after you take the test. If you have already taken the test and have your scores, please note that it can take ETS up to four weeks to send score reports. Please plan according to the program deadlines when requesting the report of your test scores.
  • TOEFL scores (for international applicants)
    • URI school and program codes are the same as listed above under the GRE scores section.
    • Suggested times to take the test are the same as listed above under the GRE scores section
