Information for Behavioral Science Applicants

The deadline for RECEIPT of applications and supporting materials is January 20, 2010.
Please note that any application not received by that date will not be considered. Selected applicants will be invited (but not required) to participate in a Meet the Area Day conducted in late February. This visit will provide an opportunity for you to learn more about our program, department, and university and for us to learn more about you.

How to Apply to the Experimental Psychology Doctoral Program

The Graduate School utilizes a self-managed application. You can download an application or apply on-line by clicking on the Graduate School Application Link found on the admissions page (forms support required; Netscape® recommended for Windows® systems). A completed file must include:

  • Two copies of a completed, signed application form.
  • Official GRE scores, sent directly to the Psychology Department. The behavioral science program does not require the Advanced Test in Psychology.
  • Official transcripts from all universities attended (2 copies).
  • Application fee: $65.

**Please Note** The following requirements differ from the standard URI Graduate School application:

  • Three letters of recommendation. (The self-managed application form indicates two letters are required, however our program requires three.)
  • Personal Statement (Approximately 2 pages). Please include the following information as part of your statement:
    • Why you are interested in pursuing behavioral science / experimental psychology;
    • Interests and faculty members with whom you might wish to work, or focus areas you wish to pursue.
    • Research and teaching experience (including tutoring);
    • Service / extracurricular activities;
    • “Fit” with the URI Psychology Department multicultural mission, i.e., how your work (including service activities) or interests have or will enhance your understanding of a diverse world.

Additional important dates:

  • Monday, February 15, 2010 : Meet the Area Day (not required for acceptance)
  • March 15 (approx.) - Notification of admissions recommendations to Graduate School.
  • March 30 (approx.) – Notification of departmental assistantships
  • April 15 (approx.) - Applicants notify program of intent to accept admission offer; final notification of waitlist applicants.

We anticipate having our entering class established by May 1.
