What Can I Do with a Degree in Psychology?

One way of viewing a BA degree in Psychology is as a step in preparation for a related advanced degree. Traditionally, advanced degrees in psychology have been at the Ph.D. level in such fields as Clinical, School, Organizational, Learning, Physiological, Measurement, Cognitive, Developmental, and Social. Master degrees also are available in some applied fields of psychology (such as School Psychology) and in related fields like Counseling and Psychiatric Social Work.

On the other hand, many undergraduates who find psychology an interesting field of study do not wish to pursue an advanced degree. Although employment in a field of psychology may be difficult without advanced study, a major in psychology actually can provide you with an excellent background for related employment in business, industry, public service, and education.

Both kinds of goals can be achieved through the Psychology Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at URI. As described in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog of the University of Rhode Island, "The College of Arts and Sciences has two main objectives: first, to enable all students to understand our intellectual heritage, the physical and biological world in which we live, and our social, economic, and political development; and, second, to provide programs of professional education in selected fields as well as a strong foundation for graduate study" (p. 45).

It is never too late to embark on a career in psychology if you are a well rounded and committed student. Many psychologists decided on a major in their senior year, or originally earned their bachelor's degree in another field.

Your BA in Psychology at URI can prepare you either to seek an entry-level position or to continue your education in a graduate program in psychology. Regardless of your career goals, there are many different paths you can take that can be rather complex and confusing. Read over the tips provided in the links below, write down any questions you may have, and bring those questions to one of us, the faculty. We'd be happy to help.
