Psi Chi and the Psychology Club hold meetings together frequently throughout the fall and spring semesters. The days and times for our meetings are arranged at the start of each semester, dependent upon students' schedules. Subscribing to our Psi Chi and Psychology Club listserver will allow you to communicate easily with other students in these organizations and you will receive emails about meetings and events.
At least once each semester, the Psi Chi students organize a faculty coffee hour, inviting their favorite faculty to enjoy conversation and refreshments. All U.R.I. students are welcome to participate in these events. Below, Professors Larry Grebstein and Lisa Harlow of the Psychology Department relax and enjoy interacting with students.
Every year, the Psi Chi and Psychology Club students organize a graduate panel discussion, inviting four or more graduate students to participate. After each graduate student describes her or his own personal experiences during the graduate school application process, we have an informal question and answer period. Undergraduate students find this discussion very useful as they learn how to select graduate programs, how to apply for funding while in graduate school, and the range of GRE scores required for acceptance into graduate schools.
Every semester, the Psi Chi and Psychology Club students invite guest speakers to their meetings in order to learn more about different types of careers in psychology. For instance, in recent years, the students have invited Professors Betsy Cooper and Jonathan Schroeder to discuss Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Professor David Faust spoke about his field of Forensic Psychology and Professor Mark Wood discussed his Experimental work involving college students and alcohol. Professor Jim Campbell spoke about his work at the U.R.I. Counseling Center.
U.R.I. Psi Chi and Psychology Club students often organize philanthropic events to benefit charitable organizations. Every December, they make Christmas ornaments for the Hasbro Toy Company. For each toy donated to Hasbro, a needy child receives a toy for the holidays. The Psi Chi and Psychology Club students enjoy making the holiday season more enjoyable for many young children. The Psi Chi and Psychology Club students are shown here with Professor Charles Collyer, holding some of their hand-made ornaments.
Our students also enjoy visiting local nursing homes to visit with the residents. At Halloween, pumpkin painting is a fun activity for our students to share with others.
In the Fall 2003 semester, our students adopted a U.R.I. walkway into the Chafee Building to keep clean and inviting!
