Participation in the U.R.I. chapter of Psi Chi can help undergraduate students prepare for graduate school in several ways. First, you will interact regularly with upper level students and learn about their experiences with the Graduate Record Exam and their applications to graduate schools. Second, you will have the opportunity to attend events designed to help undergraduate students plan their careers.
During both fall and spring semesters, the Psi Chi and Psychology Club students organize a graduate panel discussion, inviting four or more graduate students to participate. After each graduate student describes her or his own personal experiences during the graduate school application process, we have an informal question and answer period. Undergraduate students find this discussion very useful as they learn how to select graduate programs, how to apply for funding while in graduate school, and the range of GRE scores required for acceptance into graduate schools.
During the Spring 2000 semester, we used teleconferencing to make our graduate panel discussion available to students on both the Kingston and CCE campuses.
During the fall semester, Professor Harold Bibb, Associate Dean of the U.R.I. Graduate School, attends one of our meetings to discuss the graduate school application process. At this meeting, the focus is on filling out graduate school applications and writing personal statements.
Depending on students' career plans and schedules, we often organize additional events that help students make career decisions. Recently, the Psi Chi and Psychology Club students invited Dr. Schroeder, an industrial/organizational psychologist, to describe his field of psychology. The informational materials provided by Dr. Schroeder are available on the third floor of the Chafee Building at the Kingston campus.
All of these graduate school preparation events are open to interested undergraduate students. Attend our meetings and subscribe to our listserver so that you can participate in these events!
