Web Redesign

Background

Redesign of the Psychology Department web site is intended to enhance usability for students, faculty, and guests. Redesign will move the site forward toward contemporary standards of web technology. It will also allow us to engage in the URI Branding Initiative.

Progress to Date (November, 2008)

Work began in 2007 under the direction of Department Chair John Stevenson. It continues today, led by Chair Patricia Morokoff and a web task force from within the Department. The Department has been assisted by student Wai Chan, working in the summer of 2008. Production is now led by graduate student Radhika Pasupuleti, consulting with Dr. Patrick Logan (Dept. of Communication Studies).

The work was divided into four phases.

  1. Technical upgrade—now complete (posted 11/04/08)
    • We re-wrote all page coding. Page content was preserved, but page structure (coded in html) was modified to contemporary standards, using a single external style sheet for page layout (styles, positioning), and single files for page banners, navigation, and footer (server-side includes). For most pages, the page sizes were reduced considerably (20-80%), leading to faster download times.
    • We made initial modifications in site navigation. This was intended to improve consistency between programs within the department and to eliminate duplicate information.
    • We are now prepared for site-wide modification of visual design and for more rapid updating and further redesign of site information architecture.
  2. Information Architecture—underway (on-going through Fall 2008)
    • We will continue to work on site and within-page navigation to assist users in finding information.
  3. Visual Redesign—underway (on-going through Fall 2008)
    • Our goal here is to comply with the visual design standards of the University's Branding Initiative
  4. Content Redesign / Upgrade—under review (on-going through Spring 2009, with updates as needed)
    • We will review text against contemporary standards in writing for the web
    • We will be review all images on the site
