
Judith Swift has written/developed scripts for film and video which have aired on several PBS affiliates, and has constructed, authored or co-authored over 40 productions based on historical events or science. She has directed both Off and Off-Off Broadway as well as several tours for British theatre festivals and numerous productions for New England-based companies including Trinity Rep, Gamm Theatre (Resident Director), Rites and Reason (Resident Director for 12 years), and Theatre-by-the-Sea. During her 25 full-time years with the URI Theatre Department, she directed over 150 productions with a vast array of styles and genres.
She has served as a consultant to numerous professional theatres on matters ranging from artistic development to management. She also regularly coaches political candidates, corporate officers, and civic officials regarding communication and presentation skills. Swift served as the interim vice provost for academic affairs and is currently serving as the director of the Coastal Institute.
Her current teaching interests include humor in communication, nonverbal communication, sustainability and communication of science. She has also taught extensively in acting styles, improvisation, and directing for the theatre. She shares a joint appointment as Professor of Communication Studies and Professor of Theatre as well as a joint appointment with Film Media.
