Curriculum Development Grants on
Gender, Science, Math and Engineering

The Women’s Studies, Science and Engineering Curriculum Project and the College of Arts and Sciences announce the availability of six (6) $1000 awards for Summer 1998.

The goal of this initiative is to promote curriculum transformation through 1) the integration of social context, especially scholarship on gender, into courses in the sciences, mathematics and engineering; 2) the pedagogical reform in the sciences, mathematics and engineering that will engage students in their learning, and encourage critical and analytical thinking; 3) introduction of new methodologies and epistemologies in the sciences, mathematics and engineering; and 4) the integration of science and mathematics, and critiques of science and technology into social science and humanities courses, especially in Women’s Studies.

Awards are available to:

  1. Those teaching science, mathematics, or engineering courses who want to revise their course syllabus to include more social content and/or different epistemological or methodological approaches, especially related to women and/or gender, although topics on race, class, and sexual identity are strongly encouraged also.
  2. Those teaching social science and humanities courses, especially Women’s Studies, who want to revise their course syllabus to include more science and mathematics content, or critiques of science and technology.

Four (4) awards will be made to faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences, with preference given to those who teach courses with high enrollments for that department. Two (2) awards will be made to faculty members in colleges other than Arts and Sciences. The award can be used at the discretion of the recipient.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Produce a new or revised syllabus for the course indicated in the proposal
  2. Give a seminar in the coming academic year on the work you have done
  3. Design and carry out student assessment after the delivery of the new or revised course

Please submit a two page (maximum length) proposal that includes the following:

  1. What course do you plan to revise or create?
  2. What is the level of the course and what is the usual enrollment?
  3. Describe the type(s) of revision you plan
  4. Describe the expected outcomes and what type(s) of evaluation you will use

Proposals are due on Monday, 1 June in the Women’s Studies Office, Room 315, Roosevelt Hall. Proposals can be faxed to 874 4527.

Funding for the grants is provided by the College of Arts and Sciences and the National Science Foundation (via Association of American Colleges and Universities).
