Poverty Drives Prostitutes to Czech-German Border

The town of Dubi, on the Czech-German border is now the center of a growing sex trade, where 70% of the prostitutes are from the east, mostly from Bulgaria, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.

Several hundred women cater to 'sex tourists' from Germany. the women arriving from areas of high unemployment. It is estimated that more than 1 million migrants are arriving each year to the EU borders - a growing number of them are females.

More than 60% of Russia's unemployed are now women, who, when they can get work - earn $100 per month. But their new profession is dangerous, with traffickers arranging travel and visas - the inflated prices of which must be paid back with heavy interest.

Most women have passports confiscated and they live in terror. Dubi's nearby orphanage has 55 infants in its care, of whom half are the children of prostitutes. The chief of police says that 9 pimps are being prosecuted currently, in cases which involve child prostitution.
