Undergraduate Writing Consultants
The
Undergraduate Writing Consultants program is a unique opportunity for
students who excel as writers and who want to help peers while earning
credits and practical experience. Consultants tutor students in one
class throughout a semester—cultivating their writing skills and
providing feedback.
How do I become a consultant?
Instructors in any discipline nominate you based on your writing
performance and communication skills.
What training do I receive to prepare me to
tutor my peers?
You are trained through a one-semester course, WRT 353, Issues and
Methods in Writing Consultancy (3 credits). This prerequisite is
designed to familiarize you with one-to-one tutoring in various
writing situations and is taken the semester before you tutor.
Consultants typically complete WRT 353 during the spring of their
sophomore or junior year; however, first-year students who are highly
recommended by faculty may enroll in this course as well.
What are my responsibilities?
In the fall following your completion of WRT 353, you begin tutoring.
This includes working with a single class (typically one which you
already have taken or one in your major), attending many class
sessions and meeting students one-to-one outside of class to guide
them through the stages of the writing process. You provide feedback
on rough drafts of writing assignments and work closely with the
instructor.
What credit do I receive?
As you tutor you are enrolled in WRT 383, Field Experience in Writing
Consultancy (3 credits). Though this course does not meet regularly,
it provides valuable supervision and assistance throughout the
semester.
May I be a consultant for more than one
semester?
Absolutely. The Department of Writing & Rhetoric strives
to build a group of consultants who can use their prior training to
reach out to students in subsequent semesters. WRT 383 may be repeated
for up to 9 credits.
Take
advantage of this opportunity to join a specially trained group of
advanced writers.
