| Rhetoric and Composition: a shared program with
the English Department
Students in the English M.A. or Ph.D. graduate program may choose to
specialize in rhetoric and composition. Students who declare that option
take required courses and pursue an understanding of the field through
their course papers or thesis topics. Faculty research and interests have
made the Rhetoric and Composition Program particularly strong in the areas
of contemporary theory, cultural studies, and critical pedagogy.

M.A. students who choose to specialize in rhetoric and composition may
be most interested in teaching writing at the secondary or college level
or may intend to pursue a Ph.D. at another institution. Students may
complete a portfolio, focusing on issues in rhetorical theory, research on writing, and/or
writing instruction.
Doctoral students with a declared specialization write dissertations in
the field and are introduced to the profession through a variety of
professional development assignments or opportunities. For example,
doctoral students may be required, as part of a course, to submit a
proposal to CCCC. In addition, to prepare students for all areas of the
composition job market, experienced teaching assistants may have the
chance to teach a writing course at the 300-level; all students tutor in
the campus Writing Center; and selected students may be awarded
administrative duties in the Writing Center or in the Writing & Rhetoric Department.
