Since 1996, we have been creating list serves and electronic
bulletin boards that enable students in writing classes across the
country to discuss and debate public issues, work on collaborative
projects, and meet face-to-face at end-of-term regional conferences.
During an IEDP semester, students use the internet to debate and
collaborate with students from around the country about national
issues of social and political importance. Participation helps
students develop rhetorical, communicative, and dialogical skills in
electronic and real-world environments.
For faculty, the project offers a collaborative network of support
and resources for innovative approaches to teaching and learning. We
share an interest in trying to answer such questions as
- What should be the role of writing and rhetoric in an electronic
democracy?
- How can we best educate ourselves for active citizenship in the
21st century?
- What is the relationship between language and public life?
Students join topical email lists of their choice--each list is
devoted to deliberation of a focused campaign or public issue; the
students' dialogue with each other drives the content and direction of
each discussion list. At the end of the semester, students meet their
email partners face-to-face or via video technology to collaborate and
reach a new level of debate or consensus.
