HSS College Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes

DEPTH AND APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE – You will acquire and utilize knowledge and skills necessary for a professional position or graduate /professional training in disciplines represented in the College of Human Science and Services. By the time you complete your education, you will:

  • Develop a multidisciplinary perspective along with a more focused specialty knowledge base

  • Understand the importance of and look for opportunities to engage in multidisciplinary collaborations

  • Identify and apply what is known by you and by the profession, and identify what is not yet known

  • Translate basic and applied knowledge and theory to practice with entry level competence in a specific discipline

  • Identify basic principles of practice and understand how to apply those principles to specific cases

CRITICAL INQUIRY – You will understand and use methods of inquiry appropriate to your discipline or practice, including field-relevant analytical tools. By the time you complete your education, you will:

  • Locate, consider, and question information and arguments from a variety of sources.

  • Evaluate the validity of all sources of information including teachers, peer-reviewed literature, the Internet, library, media and raw data.

  • Create cohesive, persuasive arguments relative to your discipline by evaluating, applying and/or integrating appropriate information from various sources

PROBLEM SOLVING – You will use acquired knowledge, skills, and creativity to identify and solve problems. By the time you complete your education, you will:

  • Go beyond basic recall and comprehension to the identification and analysis of a problem and its constituent parts

  • Synthesize information from appropriate sources to form a deeper understanding of a problem and its relation to issues in your field

  • Evaluate multiple perspectives and potential solutions

  • Propose and justify an appropriate solution to a given problem

COMMUNICATION - You will communicate clearly and effectively using a variety of methods. By the time you complete your education, you will:

  • Communicate effectively in writing using field-specific terminology and conventions in a variety of forms for professional audiences

  • Speak and listen effectively in both formal and informal settings

  • Integrate technology, visual information, or graphic displays in formal communications

  • Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication skills for professional settings.

  • Incorporate and draw upon multiple cultural perspectives in written, oral and interpersonal communications

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – You will gain knowledge and practice regarding the ethical principles and best practices in human science and services. By the time you complete your education, you will:

  • Reflect on the motivating forces of one’s own behavior and perceptions

  • Practice systematic self-assessment and reflection

  • Understand the limitations of one’s own knowledge base and the social –historical-cultural factors that influence one’s knowledge
