Brothers and Sisters,

There has been no shortage of action over the course of the past month.  Several bills at the State House, the beginning of contract talks, our continuing fight for information on the despicable pension reform package, as well as working to protect our work here on campus have kept us all very busy.  I thank everyone for there support and efforts in moving Local 528 forward.  I have been continually impressed with the passion and dedication displayed by all our Brothers and Sisters.

Last week was a particularly proud week.  On Tuesday along with our Brothers and Sisters from around the State packed the House Finance Committee room forcing our opponents to stand in the hallway.  A clear message was sent.  The message was the working people of RI demand a correction to the income tax in the form of H#7729.  The bill was held for further study.  However we will continue to push for a floor vote on the issue.  Doing so will force our elected officials to decided where they stand.  Do they stand with there constituents or do they stand with the wealthy who line there pockets on the backs of working men and women?

Contract negotiations with the State have begun.   As always when we have an agreement to bring back there will be a meeting where we will discuss and answer questions.  After meeting as we have always done we will vote on the agreement.  I have been asked quite a bit what the time table will be.  To be very honest this is our first negotiation with the Chafee administration and it would not surprise me if we get a deal done quickly, or if it takes a while to come to an agreement.  We are going in with our eyes wide open and our prepared for anything.

I am proud to make it known Local 528 Dinning Services will be continuing to provide catering services at the Ryan Center after the Ryan center’s management attempted subcontract the work.  Thank you to all of our Brothers and Sisters in Dinning who made me aware of this, and thank you for doing such an outstanding job.  The high quality of your work was a big factor in keeping this work in Local 528 where it belongs.

Thank you for all your help, and support.  As I often say “as long as we stay united together we can move forward and accomplish great things.”  I look forward to continuing our work together.

In Solidarity,

Mike McDonald

President Local 528
