| Rowing
has a long history at URI. Founded in 1965, the team has produced fast
crews and multiple U.S. National Team Olympic Oarsmen along the way.
The men and women were both part of the club team until 1998 when the women were elevated to varsity status. Although the men's team has retained it's "club" status, it was by no means left behind. The men's team at URI continues to thrive because of the hard work and dedication of the rowers, its alumni, and a strong commitment from the Recreational Services Department. The URI Men's Crew Team at URI continues to welcome and encourage all those who have an interest in learning the sport of rowing. Nearly 100% of the rowers that have come through the program have not had any experience prior to college (including URI's four Olympians.) The program at URI is on the rise. The facilities and equipment are quickly approaching that of some of our main competitors. Combined with a competent and committed coaching staff, the University of Rhode Island Rowing program is looking bright. |
