Anna Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center

Opening September 2013

The University of Rhode Island’s new Anna Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center is approaching completion following a nearly 7 year process of collecting data, selecting a site, and garnering support. Once completed, the new modernized facility will provide state-of-the-art fitness equipment and diverse program opportunities and services designed to promote the health and well-being of students, faculty, staff and alumni in a safe, inviting environment.  Not only will the AF Center be a wonderful resource for the entire campus community but a great recruitment tool for prospective students and faculty. Most importantly, this center will provide students with high-quality recreation and fitness opportunities designed to promote physical and psychological well-being, which will not only supports their academic success, but will contribute to the development of healthy lifestyle habits.

The current scope involves renovations to the 29,618 square foot, former award-winning Roger Williams Dining Hall, originally constructed in 1969, into a 33,000 square foot full-service fitness and wellness center. The renovation will leave most of the original structure in place and will include 8,000 square feet of new construction to accommodate a street facade and main entrance. The increased space will help alleviate the functional shortcomings and over-crowding of existing fitness and wellness activity space. A significant design feature of the project is to restore the north landscape pedestrian corridor which will link Hope Commons to the Roger Williams Residence Hall Complex and the Athletic Complex. When the facility opens there will be over 50 new on-campus student employment opportunities for those interested in working in a fun, high energy, wellness orientated environment. The end result will be a vibrant, modern full-service, fitness and wellness facility in the heart of the Kingston Campus, with close access to both academic, residential, and other auxiliary enterprise facilities. Undoubtedly the Anna Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center promises to be the new “social hub” on campus!
