Joey Mello

In his first year of coaching the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team, Joey Mello and the team of 29 sailors, have exceeded expectations.  Under his guidance the team has won the Marchiando and Friis Trophies along with top finishes placing second at the Moody and BU Trophies. In addition, the team has also finished a very creditable 2nd place at the well known big boat event, Kennedy Cup (in Navy 44s).

Along with coaching here at URI, Joey has served as coach at Bishop Stang High School and Providence College, as well as the New Bedford Yacht Club. As a young sailor he was the founder of the Dartmouth High School Sailing Team, which has since grown to be a very successful varsity program.

Joey returns to URI after graduating from the University in 2004 with a BS in Ocean Engineering. While at URI he sailed competitively for four years, sailing throughout New England and the rest of the country at many of the events his team now sail in. His recent experience as a college student and college sailor is an asset that team members can take advantage of.
